The Freewell Adjustable ND Filter combines a VND (Variable ND) filter with a Mist diffusion filter, providing greater control over light and giving your footage a more cinematic look. Adjustment within a 2–5-stop range (ND4–ND32) allows you to easily adjust exposure to conditions ranging from a cloudy sky to standard sunlight, without having to swap filters. The Hard Stop system sets the extreme adjustment limits, eliminating the risk of exceeding the operating range and causing cross-polarization effects. The filter is made of Pure High Definition optical glass with a multi-layer coating (18 layers), and additional protection against dust, scratches, and fingerprints enhances its durability during everyday use.

ND Adjustment and Diffusion Effect in a Single Filter

The Freewell filter combines two functions into a single accessory, eliminating the need for a separate diffusion filter and an adjustable ND filter. Variable neutral density allows for smooth control over the amount of light reaching the sensor, making it easier to maintain proper exposure settings while filming and photographing. At the same time, the Mist layer subtly softens the image and gently diffuses the light around its sources, creating a more cinematic look for your shots without losing a significant amount of detail. This solution works well for video production as well as creative portrait and outdoor photography.

Hard Stop – Fast and Reliable Adjustment

The Hard Stop mechanism limits the filter’s rotation range to 2–5 stops, making it quick and consistent to set the desired level of darkness. This solution eliminates the possibility of entering the range that causes the cross-polarization effect, known from many classic VND filters. This will be particularly appreciated by those shooting dynamic footage on the move (such asrun & gun), where every second counts and there’s no time to change fixed filters. An additional advantage is the absence of vignetting when using lenses with focal lengths of 16 mm and above.
